Hi Friends,

A Belief is a Tool

Have you ever noticed how powerful the two little words “I am” can be?

Whatever comes after them has a way of shaping how we see ourselves, how we behave, and even what we believe is possible for us. I am not good at this. I am a failure. I am strong. I am too old. I am capable. I am creative. I am not enough.

We often treat these statements as facts. But what if a belief is actually a tool? And what if we get to decide whether the tool we are using is helping us build something—or holding us back?

Take “I am not good at this.” Maybe you tried something once and struggled. Maybe someone told you that you weren't talented. Over time, that experience can turn into a belief. And once you believe you're not good at something, you may stop trying, avoid opportunities, or give up before you really begin. The belief becomes a wall.

But what happens when you change it to “I am learning this”? Suddenly, there is room for possibility. You don't have to be good at something yet. You are allowed to be a beginner. The belief becomes a tool that helps you move forward instead of keeping you stuck.

Or consider “I am a failure.” One mistake, one bad decision, one failed relationship, or one disappointing season can sometimes become part of the story we tell ourselves. But there is a huge difference between “I am a failure” and “I failed at something.” The first turns an experience into an identity. The second allows you to learn from it and continue. You did something that didn't work. That doesn't mean you don't work.

And then there is “I am strong.” That can be a beautiful and empowering belief. It can remind us of everything we've already survived and help us face something difficult with courage. But even a positive belief can become a harmful tool if we use it against ourselves. I am strong, so I shouldn't need help. I am strong, so I shouldn't be tired. I am strong, so I just have to keep going.

Sometimes strength looks completely different. Sometimes strength is saying, “I need help.” Sometimes it is resting. Sometimes it is admitting that something hurts. And sometimes the strongest thing we can do is stop pretending that we are okay when we aren't.

That is what makes beliefs so interesting. A belief is a tool. And like any tool, it can be used to build or to destroy.

So maybe it's worth paying a little more attention to the words that come after “I am.”

Are they helping you take the next step, or convincing you not to take it?

Are they giving you courage, or keeping you small?

Are they describing who you truly are, or simply repeating something you've believed for a very long time?

Because maybe you don't have to throw away your entire story.

Maybe you just need to look at the tool you're using, and decide whether it's still serving you.

What comes after “I am” in your life right now? And is that belief helping you or hurting you?
